» 2. Turin, the Destiny of a Capital City

Thanks to the brilliant energy of the Savoy’s, Turin was the one of the most important focal centres of European art and architecture in the 17th and 18th centuries. Three genius have contributed to this glory: Guarino Guarini, Filippo Juvarra and Bernardo Vittone, that have created baroque masterpieces in all their splendour.
In the second half of the 19th century, Turin became the first capital city of Italy after having been the leading city in the Italian Resorgimento.
Nowadays, Turin presents itself as an elegant and cosmopolitan city, World Design Capital 2008, with a perfect mix of industrialization and aesthetics.
We propose a unique three day tour to discover Turin.


Program

1st Day

Hospitality and Unique Dinner

Arrival in the afternoon (at Turin o Milan Malpensa airport) and transfer to Turin. Check-in and accommodation in a central 4 star hotel Welcome, short walk and aperitif in an historical Torinese bar. Dinner on board of the Ristotram (a tasty and suggestive Piedmont typical dinner on an historical tramway through the city centre, accompanied by a saxophone and the voice of a tour guide) Overnight stay


2nd Day
Architectural and Cultural Turin
The tour starts along Via Roma with the most famous shops of the city, and then to Piazza S. Carlo with its equestrian monument dedicated to Emanuele Filiberto.
On the way we will taste the traditional “Bicerin”, an antique chocolate drink that was, over the years, and is still well appreciated.
The visit continues towards Piazza Carignano, the most important of Juvarra’s achievements, in terms of civil architecture. The elegant palace was the headquarter of the sub alpine parliament that sustained Vittorio Emanuele II in his project of Italian unification. Piazza Castello where are facing: Palazzo Madama (visit inside), the antique medieval castle, obtained from the ruins of the old Roman gates ruins and successively restructured with the adding of the imposing façade by  Juvarra, Palazzo Reale, Savoy family’s residence, the Regio Theatre, l’Armeria and the Royal Library.
Visit of San Giovanni Battista’s Cathedral of the 15th century where the Sacra Sindone is kept, and San Lorenzo’s church. The internal baroque design is richly decorated with polychrome marble, stucco, gilding and surmounted by the magnificent cupola. Lunch in a typical local reestaurant.
Walking along Via Po we will find the Mole Antonelliana, symbol of the city and  and home to the National Cinema Museum,
Visit of the museum and glass lift to the top to enjoy a panoramic view over the city. Carrying on down Via Po we reach Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the biggest entirely porticoed European Square. After visiting the church of the Gran Madre, located on the other side of the Po river and under which the Holy Graal is said to be hidden, the day tour ends with an aperitif in Piazza Vittorio, in typical Turin style.
Dinner and overnight stay in hotel.

3rd Day
Royal Turin
In the morning we will visit the Royal Palace of Venaria, the biggest Savoyard residence in Piedmont, considered UNESCO universal patrimony, representation by excellence of the monarchy and its magnificence. This small Versailles of Piedmont became the summer residence of the Savoy and was transformed into a majestic baroque residence by Garove, Juvarra and Alfieri.
Highly recommended is the visit to the Royal Gardens styled back to their splendour by a team of 200 experts among architects and botanists.
Lunch in a typical restaurant close to the Royal Palace.
After lunch, visit of the Superga Basilica, projected by Filippo Juvarra and located at the top of the hill. In good weather days, it’s an excellent viewing point to admire the panorama of the Alps.

The rest of the afternoon is free for visits to museums (for example, the Egyptian Museum that hosts the world’sa most important second collection about Egyptian civilization, after the one in Cairo or the Savoy’s Gallery, one of the most important Italian picture-galleries with collections from Palazzo Reale, Palazzo Carignano and Palazzo Durazzo in Genova) or shopping.

4th Day
Turin of Fiat, the Olympics and Taste
Starting from the centre, we go along Parco del Valentino, passing in front of Torino Esposizioni, historical offices by the architect Luigi Nervi, where the Ice Hockey competitions were disputed during the Winter Olympics to then arrive to the “new” Palavela, the reinterpretation by Gae Aulenti of the Palazzo a Vela, inaugurated in occasion of Italia ’61, centenary of Italian Unification.
The visit continues to the Oval Lingotto, host of the speed-skating competitions; the Palaolimpico, work of Arata Isozaki, the most famous Japanese architect, the Olympic Stadium, temple of the opening and closing ceremonies and stadium where Torino and Juventus football teams play. The tour ends in front of the Villaggio Olimpico, symbol of the urban valorisation of the city and Quartier General of Turin 2006, passing under the Arco Olimpico that bears a symbolic function as an innovative structure (one of the city highest construction, visible from a distance) that represents the urban renewal during the winter games, then arrival at the Lingotto, important exhibition centre of industrial Turin, transformed by the architect Renzo Piano into a multifunctional centre.
Arriving at the to the Lingotto Exhibition centre we will visit the modern picture-gallery of Giovanni and Marella Agnelli (owners of Fiat) that will soon become a symbol of the city. Due to its magnificent architecture performed by Renzo Piano, the site is the consecration of the Agnelli’s Dynasty story as well as the one of a city now fully immersed into the 21st century’s era. Among the work in exhibitions, we note a variety of pictures by Canaletto and Matisse as well as sculpture by Canova representing the pedagogic and aesthetic ideal of the Advocate Agnelli who asserted that the collection’s aim was to give “ pleasure, beauty and joy”.
Tasting lunch at Eataly the world’s biggest wine and food market, situated in front of the Lingotto. After lunch possibility to buy typical products as souvenirs.
In the afternoon transfer to the airport for return to place of origin.
